I had the pleasure of speaking to an auditorium full of middle school students at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School in New York City. I shared both my work and my personal experience with Loving Day. Afterwards, eighth grader Willa Ferrer wrote an impressive piece for the school newsletter entitled “Loving Day Founder Inspires Students to Embrace Their Identity.”
After expressing her experience of feeling out of place, she wrote: “But now I feel that being multiracial in a way connects me to a larger multicultural community. This is my identify, and I take pride in it. Mr. Tanabe’s speech had a tremendous impact on me, and I hope to see more speakers like him visit our school.”
